This week has brought us some frigid temperatures. These conditions are perfect for clearing underbrush and tree removal. The postponed and/or cancelled golf rounds provide us the perfect opportunity to improve the green's micro environment.
Yesterday we began our work on #16 at the Players Club. The back right of the sixteenth green has been trouble ever since we planted the MiniVerde greens. The problem is lack of sunlight.
Sunlight is vital to the success of any turf and especially important for the new ultradwarf bermudagrass varieties. Eight hours of sunlight (minimum) in the winter/spring is the target range for healthy turf. There are many factors that influence our decisions during removal. Homeowner property, aesthetics, and environmental concerns top the list of limiting factors when clearing woodlands. When possible we try to eliminate as many sunlight inhibiting trees as possible.
Here are some pictures of our tree removal technique.
