PC - Green's drain relocation project

Over the past few weeks we have been relocating the green side drain clean-outs. We are moving the drains to six feet outside of the original green's edge. This will provide uniformity throughout the course. This also allows us to evaluate the condition of some older drains piping. Below I will take you through the process of relocating the drain clean-outs.

Fig.1

In (Fig.1) you see the drain as it was originally installed.  The existing green edge is approximately six feet away. However, the original green edge (orange dots) is merely two to three feet away. Our goal is to add an extension to the pipe and relocate the drain inlet.

Fig.2

Figure 2 shows the drain after soil removal. This particular drain was in good condition. Removal and replacement was not necessary. Although this pipe received a passing grade, others do not. In those cases further excavating and inspection are necessary to ensure that we remove all of the damaged piping.

Figure 3 shows the existing pipe and the connected extension. Three feet of new piping normally does the job, however there have been a few cases where up to five feet are necessary. After connecting the new pipe we then back fill the trench and position the drain inlet.

Fig.4

In (Fig.4) you see an almost finished product. We have positioned the inlet six feet away from the original greens edge, leveled it to the contour of the turf and then back filled. Our next step is to replace the turf. We replace the sod exactly how it was removed even though the cut-out for the drain has been moved There are two reasons for this. One is that the sod will reseat with less seams. Two is so we can cut a new, cleaner drain cut-out. The new cut-out will secure the inlet until the sod tacks itself down.

Figure 5 shows the completed project. This task normally takes 30-45 minutes per drain. As of May 24th we have completed all of the greens on The Players Club.
